Pole impact test

A pole impact test involves accelerating a vehicle under test on a test sled and then launching it onto a fixed, vertical pole. The vehicle is held at right angles to the direction of motion or at a slightly lower angle to the pole. Since 2015, more demanding criteria have applied to this in the Euro NCAP crash test. The lateral impact angle was reduced from 90 degrees to 75 degrees in order to be able to depict accidents and their consequences even more realistically.

As the impact shock only affects a very limited area of the vehicle, very high deformation loads are generated, allowing the pole to penetrate deep into the passenger cabin.  Without effective protection, the pile would hit the head – with correspondingly dangerous injuries as a result.

For more than ten years, the so-called pole impact test is an integral part of the crash tests of the European consumer protection program Euro NCAP.
